As a parent, Black Star Line has helped me develop the tools of reflection, grace and understanding for my self and my son. Also, as a black mother of a 4 year old who will be starting school. BSL has broadened my understanding of what education can look like for him. Knowing there are options for educating my son gives me confidence and I am so grateful for BSL. Thank you!

Shay Brown

I love Black Star Line. I was not aware how much I needed a community of supportive Black Parents until I began attending BSL meetings and events. I have learned so much in Black Star Line spaces. BSL is making me a better parent. To be honest, I am still a bit in awe of the support, affirmation, and collective wisdom of the group.

“I have been part of EYBS since it started. I have come to the conclusion that EYBS is for me a nice firm stepping stone. EYBS has been an eye-opener to so many things a lot of people don't get told or hear about when they are going into adulthood and exiting being a "kid". Most people don't get to have a safe place to learn about what they are about to get into. Going into adulthood causes a lot of stress and confusion, we kids) are told different stories about what we are about to face. And I feel as though EYBS let me know what was important and I will be going into adulthood without being completely clueless and oblivious to what's ahead. Better equipped than most people.”

"Understanding the difference between being a mother/father and being a parent; developmental/maturation limitations; the importance of spiritual yoking; the importance/power of sacred ritual; how egoic-structure can undermine productivity; the joy of service to Black community"

Dr. RaShon

”Before joining the Embrace Your Best Self program I was seeking support that would teach me methods to living a balanced life in this ever changing society. In 2017 I was invited to the BSL program by a friend (who was also in the program). He knew this was just what I was looking for and really needed, life had gotten pretty hard. The great part about the program are the mentors and coaches who supported my emotional development and reminded me of who I am by exposing me to African/African American/Black culture and principles. I have an understanding of what it means to belong first to myself and what that means as a young adult. My experience with EYBS has changed my life and led me to discovering my true passions and as well having the courage to explore the world. Through my journey I’ve found techniques which I use in my everyday life that balance my mind, heal my body and raise my spirit. I have found my calling and now teach yoga through my business Souls Edge. ”

“I want to do something that helps people. Like doing legal work for good. I am volunteering at the Aquarium doing work around climate change. Being a lawyer and advocating against environmental racism would be something that I might want to do.”

I think the most valuable aspect of EYBS is the connection to the community. The fact that I was able to expand on my internship has been helpful financially. Things like Warriors at Rest have been a good mental space to be in. I enjoyed the different people who came and presented. For example, the homeownership workshop helped me realize that homeownership is obtainable.

Dakaria Heru - 24

I learned how to use various Microsoft 365 applications. Additionally, I was able to visit Othello Park and engage with the community during the summer.

EYBS is great and I hope to stay for a long time

Anthony Maxie - 14

For me, the most valuable aspect of our internship has been the community and the opportunity to learn about different perspectives and aspects of life from within it. Since our weekly meetings, I have become much more grounded in my sense of self, and my confidence has expanded. One memorable experience for me has been the ways we connect with each other at our social gatherings because it is nice to have fun and talk in person with other Black youth.

Sabrionna Barquet - 24

My experience working with and hosting an EYBS intern has been incredibly beneficial. At the time of recruiting Eleyah i didn’t know that her involvement would set the stage for me recruiting and enlisting in help from others in my community and really gave me a jump start in building the team that would make it possible for me to be successful in my position at Surge. I’m very appreciative that this space exist to help support young people and young adults who are still figuring things out have access to paid exploratory opportunities. Eleyah excels in completing her tasks efficiently, and I truly admire her dedication. I believe there’s great potential for her to enhance her presence in staff meetings and represent Surge more actively during EYBS calls. I’m enthusiastic about supporting her long-term growth and am eager to explore opportunities that align with her goals. Eleyah’s intelligence and her ability to understand and respond to the needs of others are remarkable qualities. I envision her thriving in a role where she can confidently lead larger organizational projects and effectively coordinate support from her team. I'm committed to providing guidance and feedback to help her achieve success in these endeavors.

As a parent, I cannot express enough gratitude for the Embrace Your Best Self program. My 14-year-old son absolutely loves it and has grown so much from participating. Each session is packed with valuable lessons that resonate with him and help him build confidence, develop life skills, and embrace his unique potential. The facilitators genuinely care about the kids and create a supportive environment where they feel heard and valued. My son is inspired and excited to share what he’s learned, and I’ve seen such positive changes in his outlook and sense of responsibility. Thank you, Black Star Line, for offering a program that truly uplifts, cares and engages with our youth!

Erin Bryant-Thomas

Black StarLine is a great blessing for Black Kids. Helping kids to find themselves and teaching them how to maneuver in an anti-Black, racist system is crucial to their survival. I love the emphasis on Village Schooling vs sending our kids to the toxic public schools that does not have black kids best interests at heart. BSL should be national.

Wayne Dixon

“When Black Dot the business hub of the Africatown Initiative was asked if we wanted to host a EYBS Intern we jumped at the opportunity. We did our due diligence, it came down to three finalists and from that three we chose Mr. Henry Igwala in February 2021. His internship responsibilities included event logistics, setting up social media campaigns, and vendor liaison for participants in our summer markets. At the end of Henry’s one year internship, he became such a valuable asset that we offered him a contract and luckily for us he accepted. Henry now works for us 35 hours a week, and is the Assistant Community Manager at Black Dot Underground. It has been an amazing experience for us to participate in this program. EYBS is impacting the lives of young people which ripples out into our community making it a better place.”

Curtiss Calhoun

"My village supports me to be my best self by encouraging me in the things that I do and by encouraging me to try new things. To give new experiences a chance even if I am unsure. A lot of times I don’t want to try new things but my GrandMa and aunties will tell me to try anyway, they say that I won’t know I like something unless I try. When. With them on vacation many times I would say I didn’t want to do this or that. But they would always push me to take a chance, explore and try it…..ya never know.”

NiAni Rashaad

“Working for BSL as an Intern, has taught me the benefits of working with a community-oriented team. I’ve learned so much about the importance of staying connected to a team by communicating and having check-ins that can be related to work or even asking how someone has been outside of work. Being a BSL employee has also helped me see the importance of hosting and showing up to events that help create and uplift community.”

Alaceia Lemon

"I was homeschooled because my parents wanted me to be educated in a loving environment with people who care about me. They wanted me to be in a positive Black environment and have a successful educational experience. I study what other kids study but they introduced a lot of Black History, books and issues that are about Black people. At Black Star Line I learned about myself and that I am valued and that I can produce any thing and to get rid of any road blocks that might get in my way."

Olu Dixon

“When we (EYBS) went to the south on the Civil Rights Tour I was able to talked to people that knew Martin Luther King personally. Dr. Bernard LaFayette Jr. got on our tour bus and told us stores about how MLK really was. He and other people that we talked to were also part of the Civil Right Movement. I am from the north and it was my first time traveling to Atlanta and Alabama. I was able to learn a lot about what my people did ….. and accomplished. I loved going to Tuskegee. When our group was walking across Edmund Pettus Bridge in Alabama I realized how powerful my people are, sometimes it may not seem like it, but we are very powerful.”

Meeting new people in the meetings has helped me become more comfortable speaking in front of others

Jalani WIlson - 14

EYBS has taught me the importance of accountability, punctuality, and discipline, while also encouraging me to embrace myself and everything that comes with it. EYBS creates a safe space for me to be vulnerable, ask questions, and be present with others. This has shown me that, no matter who I am with, I don’t have to change myself to be accepted. I’ve learned the significance of community, and the support of others has helped me realize that I don’t have to do everything on my own. Even when circumstances make me feel alone, I understand that I truly am not.

Jasmine Smith - 24

What I have learned from EYBS is to always show up my best self, whether it means turning on my camera for a Zoom meeting or simply being present, because it makes a difference. Additionally, I have learned about Kwanzaa, its origins, and its cultural significance for Black and African people. Through EYBS, I've discovered that I like to make a strong impression in every setting, showcasing who I am and what I can contribute.

Ardaja Callandret - 19

My experience in the program has been great, even though I miss more sessions than I should. The important lessons we share during our time together, which I couldn’t learn anywhere else, have profoundly impacted my life, and I’m truly grateful for that.

Having interns from the Black Star Line (BSL) Embrace Your Best Self Transformational Program has been amazing for Olu Productions, especially in our UPtimistic Gear division. They’ve handled everything from organizing inventory and shipping orders to helping customers at the N2E Plaza and community events. Their energy, dedication, and willingness to learn have been incredible. They’ve truly made a difference in helping us grow and connect with the community. We’re so proud of their progress and grateful to have them on our team!

Olu Dixon

The Embrace Your Best Self Program at Black Star Line has been a wonderful, educational, and self empowering curriculum for my daughter’s personal development. She has learned to value hard work and responsibility, and she is growing in her identity as a young Black girl.

Kateesha Atterberry

"Growing up in the BSL community I have developed my own capacity to achieve greatness. BSL has shown me what it means to be in community with people you care about. I've learned how to work with people where they at while creating space for growth. BSL wants to see folks evolve socially, emotional, psychologically and that is not just seen but felt"

Kari Heru

“As a EYBS alumni, I realize that the program helped me identify what I wanted in a life career while also learning the importance of my African heritage and ancestors. Knowledge of where I come from and an understanding of our accomplishments as a people affected how I saw myself. EYBS opened up my mind and encouraged me to be more comfortable and confident.”

Louis Collins

“Working with BSL as an Intern for Black Dot/Africa Town has taught me a lot in the past 14 months and I am glad to have found this program. From financial literacy to mental health this program touches all aspects of growing up black and helped prepare me for adulthood. Through group conversation I was able to learn from others who have been in the same situation I was now and gave me information that they have acquired through their experiences; and I feel like that is very valuable information, learning from others’ mistakes so you do not have to repeat it yourself. Being able to speak my mind in a black space with nothing but support is just amazing. This program also helped me pay rent throughout my senior year of college through their internship so that also lifted a huge burden on me and let me focus on my studies instead of working part-time at some fast-food restaurant to make money. I appreciate everything this program has done for me.”

Henry IGWALA,

“BSL has raised and educated some amazing young people. I am impressed with how they have cultivated the Black genius in children. I have engaged with students who have gone through BSL and I was thoroughly impressed. These young people are aware of who they are. From academic excellence, public speaking, creating music, dance and sports to organizing and contributing to the community. Young people who go through BSL are fearless. They are taught there historical truths which gives them high esteem and positive self-awareness that carry them through adulthood. Keep up the amazing work BSL we need you!”

Erin B. Thomas

"I'm so blessed to have made connection and to have built a relationship with BSL. BSL was the reason why I was able to save my son from the traditional school system and offer him an alternative experience. This organization helped provide a safe haven for my son and show him that there was good to be experienced through home schooling. It provided me the support as a mother to be able to offer this better way of experiencing education for my family without being alienated in my efforts. BSL gave me the gift of community."

Catrice Dennis

“The EYBS program has given me the opportunity to be around more people that look like me. At my school I am usually one of the only Black kids and it’s really hard. There times which I feel like I don’t fit in. I also have a better appreciation of being a Black young lady and the beauty of it. Because of EYBS I have been able to explore my identity as a Black person and I appreciate my culture more. I’ve gotten to a better understanding of who I am and I am proud of who I am”

Kacia Hightower

The most valuable aspects of EYBS for me are how we invite others to share their experiences and professions, as well as how our mentors motivate us to make progress both individually and as a community. It reminds me of the Village of Hope.

Isaac Isaac - 21

Something I learned in my EYBS internship experience was to speak more confidently and to collaborate with people

Sidney Thomas - 14

Black Star Line’s Embrace Your Best Self Program (EYBS) has clarified what it means to enter the early stages of adulthood. EYBS has provided guidance and created a safe space for me to share my life experiences and challenges in safety. We have also learned about money management in ways that help us navigate the real world. What EYBS teaches is something I would never learn in school, but it is incredibly important. As I transition into adulthood, lessons like these ease the pressure and anxiety of not knowing what to do or who to turn to. As a young Black man moving on to the next chapter, I’m extremely grateful to have EYBS by my side.

Olu Dixon - 20

I used to be shy and reserved in social situations. Although I have much wisdom and advice to share, I often felt no need to do so. However, I believe my current internship gives me a platform to enhance that skill.

Elleyah Holley - 24

Managing youth interns in the Village of Hope program has been such a rewarding experience. Sharing tools and guidance with the interns and watching them grow has been incredible. Seeing their confidence, skills, and potential develop over time reinforces the importance of this program and its impact on preparing future leaders.

Erin Bryant-Thomas

"I am so grateful for the work Black Star Line does in the PNW. Brilliantly bringing together Black homeschooling parent into a village learning space. Mayet and Marjon's centering thoughts of the week provides a supportive safe space for parents to be Vulnerable with our homeschooling challenges. They experience and expertise is world class and right on time every time. I appreciate being part of Village Schooling family. Thank you for the guidance Black Star line."

Adasha Turner

"EYBS has supported me in so many ways, from encouraging my entrepreneur and business goals, to helping me to increase my financial awareness as well as my emotional health. I have gained confidence in my abilities and the over support means a lot. EYBS has taught me that it is up to me to do the work to improve myself and the Black community. They acknowledge me for what I do and challenge me to do more so that I grow."

FYNNIECKO GLOVER

“EYBS is wonderful! As a parent of two teenagers I so appreciated what the program had to offer and that the coaches understood our busy schedule. Even at the height of the COVID lock down they were able to stay connected kids and families. Really fun activities like the zoom pizza party and Link Up where we would meet in a park and safety distance helped to break isolation and create a caring community.”

Zion & Mom Foxy Davison

"What I like most about Black Starline is that it truly builds community. They support everyone in the family from younger children, teens and young adults to parents and other caregivers. The conversations, tools, and programs bring about personal growth that have allowed me to be more insightful and a better parent. They lean into me and that inspires me to give back. "

Sharon Chisim

"I have learned that to be your best self you have to know your culture and past. And to know who we are, I came from greatness."

Mohammed Fatty

"Black Star Line has helped me be a better person and community member. By helping me focus on me being my best self for my girls. When I first came to Black Star Line I thought they would be helping me get my kids ready for the world but what they ended up doing was getting me ready to be a parent to get them ready for the world"

Candice Hightower

It helps me because, over time, I have learned how to manage my money, where to put it, and how to spend it wisely.

Marcel M Jones - 18

What aspects of EYBS have been valuable to me? There's truly too much to count. It made me face a lot of my fears regarding employment and my relationship with money. It helped strengthen my focus on time management and money management as well as listening skills and being a part of a bigger picture. It helped me not just focus on myself. I've learned that my consequences can't be avoided and that I must own up to where I'm wrong in order to move forward. It taught me about measuring my bandwidth and being intentional and realistic about how much I might stretch myself, and to focus on rest and good habits. Overall, it has made me a better person.

Durojaiye Heru 21

EYBS gives attendees a genuine glimpse into what life has to offer. Beyond what we typically learn as we grow older, we truly reflect and anticipate the possibilities that await if we genuinely strive for success.

Naomi Schell - 17

Working with Dakaria has been absolutely wonderful! I love her energy, her dedication, her insightfulness, her clarity, everything. She soaks up knowledge and information like a sponge and sees/makes immediate connections to community and practice. She has the great gift of being able to stay focused, on track, and on task. She is most certainly embracing her best self and helping the rest of us do the same.

Dr. Debra Sullivan

I’ve had an extremely positive and enriching experience with the EYBS program, both for my teens and for myself as a parent. The way the program has nurtured organizational skills, prioritization, and a strong sense of community is remarkable. It's evident that the connections with other families and the self-care opportunities provided by EYBS have created a well-rounded, holistic approach to parenting during the challenging "adulting years." My appreciation for the program’s impact on teens’ growth and my own development as a parent truly emphasizes how EYBS is more than just a set of lessons—it's a community-building and personal growth experience. It's also wonderful that the program helps parents feel supported and part of a "village" that shares similar values and skills. Parenting can be challenging, but knowing that you're not alone and that others are facing similar challenges makes it much more manageable and rewarding.
